Maha Saman Devalaya or the Great Saman Temple (also called Sumana Saman Devalaya) is a shrine dedicated to the deity Saman, situated at Ratnapura. Deity Saman has deeply worshiped in the region of Rathnapura and related areas in the province of Sabaragamuwa of Sri Lanka. He has been recorded as a district administrator of the region contemporary to Buddha who he met on the former’s visit to Sri Lanka.

The present shrine is said to have been built by a court minister in Dambadeniya era of Sri Lanka named Aryakamadeva, under the patronage of King Parakramabahu II, in 1270 AD.

The Perahara(Procession)
During the time that the Tooth Relic of Buddha was transferred to Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara, during wartime, King Parakramabahu VI’s[7] period, the Shrine held the Esala Perahara or the Procession of the Tooth Relic for 11 years. Later under King Rajasinghe, Saman Devala Perahara joined the Esala Perahara. Since then, the Maha Saman Devalaya hoists the Esala Perahara between July-August annually.

Delgamuwa Temple

Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple located close to Dorala Villa about 6km away. This temple is famous as the hiding place of the tooth relic of Buddha during foreign invasion times.
Currently, this temple declared as one of the archaeological sites in Sri Lanka.

Diva Guhava or Batathota Len Vihaaraya (Cave Temple) is about 7km away from Dola Villa, on the Kuruwita Erathna Sri pada Road.

This historic cave is 150 feet long, 70 feet wide, 50 feet high and faces east. Due to this natural location, the cave is well lit until sunset. The place believed that the 500 monks, including the Buddha, spent the day on his visit to Sri Pada.

 

 

Pothgul Rajamaha Viharaya, an enchanting Buddhist temple situated in the picturesque landscapes of Ratnapura, believed to have been constructed by King Vatta Gamini Abhaya (Walagammba) in the 1st century BC, underwent significant renovations of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe (1747 – 1781).

Approaching the temple, visitors are welcome by a majestic stone staircase leading to its sacred grounds. Ascending the steps, they are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and awe. Furthermore, the temple featured exquisite wall paintings and intricately sculpted representations of revered deities contributing to its rich historical heritage.
